123 - Muttergottes Galaktotrophousa

Einzeltafel. Eitempera auf Kreidegrund. Hintergrund vergoldet. Partielle Ornamentierung der Gewänder in Assistgold. Nimben ornamental punziert. The Mother of God holds the Child in her right arm. She turns to the left and turns her head towards the Christ Child. Christ holds his mother's breast with his right and the globus cruciger in his left. The Mother of God is wearing the traditional garments of the Western-style Madonna: a dark blue tunic and the dark red maphorion. A transparent white veil covers her hair. The modelling of the figures has been executed with great care and attention to detail. The image of the Christ feeding in the milk from his mother's breast may well be the most evocative representation of his human nature. The comparison between the life-giving milk and the blood flowing from the wounds in Jesus's side, granting humanity life and salvation, creates the theological context that connects the Mother of God Galaktotrophousa with Christ's suffering.
