128 - Monumentale Ikone mit der Taufe Christi

Verbund aus drei Laubholz-Brettern mit zwei Rückseiten-Sponki. Kovtscheg. Eitempera auf Levkas, Nimben vergoldet. Kirchenslawischer Titulus in Weiß am oberen Rand. Min. rest. Christ standing in the river Jordan. John at the left placing his right hand in blessing on the former's head. He is wearing a dark camel-hair gown. Three angels in a row on the opposite side of the barren landscape. The presence of God the Father and the Holy Spirit denoted by the segment of heaven and rays above. The body of Christ projecting against the dark water of the river. From the top to bottom, on a vertical axis at the centre of the icon, God the Father, the Holy Spirit, and the Son form the Trinity. An indication for the date of the icon is the addition of God the Father to the top border. This representation was highly controversial in the Orthodox Church. Even during the Council of Stoglav in Moscow 1551, the depiction of God the Father was explicitly banned. Nonetheless, the popularity of this image grew rapidly in the second half of the 16th century. The feast of the Baptism of Christ is celebrated on January 6th is one of Christianity's oldest feasts. With the Baptism, the appearance (Epiphany) of God in Jesus is celebrated. It is the first time Christ shows himself to humanity of God in Jesus. Literatur: E.
