A monumental icon showing the dormition of the Mother of God. Russia, circa 1700. Tempera on gesso on wood panel. Againgst an architectual setting. The composition organised around the bier that carries the lifeless body of the Mother of God. The bier surrounded by mourning apostles, Saints and Archangels. At the back Christ with her soul in his hands. Below a fanatical Jewish priest (sometimes named Iefoniya or Athonios) stands before the bier. Attempting to push it over, he has his hands cut off by a sword-wielding angel. The upper part depicts elven Apostles supported by angels on clouds. Christ appears above. The icon predominantely using reds, greens and blues, soft modeled facial features. Restored. 143 x 86 cm.
