Aus einer Ausgabe der "Cosmographiae Universalis" Holzschnitt, guter Erhaltungszustand. Je ca. 34 x 44,4 cm Sebastian Münster wurde 1489 in Ingelheim (Pfalz) geboren. Als Franziskaner konvertierte er 1529 zum Protestantismus und wurde Professor für Theologie, Häbräisch und Mathematik an der Universität Basel. Er war einer der bedeutesten Geographen des 16. Jahrhundert. Seine "Cosmographia" aus dem Jahr 1544 war eines der am meisten gelesenen Bücher seiner Zeit und erschien in sechs Sprachen und fast 40 Auflagen. Münster war der erste Kartograph der jedes der vier bekannten Kontinente auf ein einzelnes Blatt druckte. Sein zweites wichtiges Werk, die "Geographia", ist eine Neuauflage der Geographia des Ptolemäus. Er starb im Mai 1552 in Basel an der Pest.
