1 - Mother of God "Madre della Consolazione". Tempera on wood panel. Shown half-leng...

Mother of God "Madre della Consolazione". Tempera on wood panel. Shown half-length, the Mother of God wearing a dark red gold-embroidered cloak fastened with a brooch decorated with a cruciform motif, over a white veil and dark blue underdress. She holds the Christ Child in her right arm, wearing a gold-embroidered orange shirt and red cloak, blessing and bearing the globus cruciger. The facial features accentuated with delicate white brushstrokes, the vestments with saturated colours against a gold background. The icon's Italian title refers to the suffering of Christ, as anticipated by his mother. The iconography of the Madre della Consolazione type is of western origin. It has clearly been influenced by Italian prototypes from the 14th century. The type was probably introduced to the Orthodox-Christian world by the famous icon painter Nikolaos Tzafouris in the second half of the 15th century. This icon is very similar to one of his signed icons showing the Madre della Consolazione, which is part of a Private Collection in The Netherlands. Veneto-Cretan, probably the circle of Nikolaos Tzafoures, circa 1500. 18.6 x 14.5 cm.

Veneto-Kretisch, wohl Umkreis des Nikolaos Tzafoures, um 1500

Catalogueprice: 12.000 - 14.000 €
