Russian, circa 1600 Hintergrund und Nimbus vergoldet. Min. rest. Verso kyrillische Einritzung. 48,5 x 40 cm Egg tempera on wood. Gesso ground. Kovcheg. Against a gold background, gilded halo. Minimal restored. Scratched Cyrillic inscription on the reverse. Bach Kerit umgesetzt. Elija als greiser, auf einen Stock gestützter Prophet ist in ein 48.5 x 40 cm Rabe, der Brot im Schnabel trägt und als typologisches Vorzeichen der Ankunft des Reich The robust figure of the Prophet is seated on the mouth of his cave and holding a staff. He turns his head to the right and gazes up the raven seen flying in the top right of the icon. The appearance of the raven is sometimes interpreted as a typological omen of the coming of God`s Kingdom. The bread the raven brought him in the desert was a precursor of the consecrated bread Christians receive during the Eucharist.
