He is wearing the red chasuble and the white bishop's stole, embroidered with black crosses. At top center the Deisis showing Christ, the Mother of God and St. John the Baptist, flanked by an archangel Michael and Gabriel and the apostels St. Peter and Paul on each side. The central panel is flanked by six images showing saints and martyrs: St. Blaise, Elijah and George on the left side and Athanasios, a saint in monk's wear and Demetrius. This icon has typical Novgorod iconography. This historic artefact is distinguished by the characteristic Novgorodian colours used in icon painting. Numerious miraculous legends are attributed to the saint. The very choice of saints represented on Novgorodian icons is a vivid reflection of popular tastes. St. Nicholas was one of the most highly venerated saints in Novgorod. He was patron of the husbandman, praying for his needs and interceding for him in times of need. The saint's feast day is December 6th. Michael and Gabriel and the apostels St. Peter and Paul on each side.
