Angelo Inganni

179 - Angelo Inganni

Italian river landscape with farmers. 1854. Oil on canvas on wood, restored. Lower left signed and dated "Inganni. 1854". Framed. Norditalienische Flusslandschaft. 1854. Öl auf Leinwand auf Holz, rest. Unten links 54.7 x 70.5 cm Hinsichtlich seines Frühwerks sind nur sporadische Verweise auf seine malerische "The portrait painting of agricultural labourers or banditi are cognate with what in Britain were known by the term "fancy" paintings - initially late eighteenth-century sentimental representations of the poor for clientele of buyers from a different, and obviously higher, class. Into this broad category in Italy also go representations [.] of the painter of urban vedute (view paintings) Angelo Inganni (1807-80). [.] The urban veduta survived as a genre from the eighteenth century into the nineteenth, and in particular picked up on novelties of architecture, transport, or lifestyle in the contexts it documented. The genre was eventually largely replaces by the photographic documentation of street monuments, bays, mountains, or other urban backdrops [.] Whether in painted vedute of Italian city streets and piazzas by artists such as Angelo Inganni from the 1830s onwards, or in the street photography that comes later, there is a function the artist seem to have set themselves to perform: namely, to capture and to document the material fabric of streets, populated by a colourful mixture of rich and poor strollers, together with curricles or other smart carriages of the earlier age, or the trams, horse-drawn buggies, and first motorcars of the photographs. The element of social protest is entirely absent here. If the poor are included, they constitute a kind of "social picturesque". And they are, in any case, balanced out by the fine buildings [.]. This is part and parcel of the philosophical "quietism" that dominates the art of the period. [.] In 1879, only a year before his death, Inganni has not, after more then forty years of practising it, substantially tampered with the philosophical underpinnings of the veduta genre."
