Justus 66 x 46.2 cm Regierungspräsidenten Expertise by Prof. Dr. phil. Justus Müller Hofstede, Bonn, June 2nd 2007. Hohenpriesters. Petrus folgte von weitem. Mitten im Hof hatte man ein Feuer angezündet und Provenance: Since 1920 in possession of a District president, Cologne leugnete es und sagte: Frau, ich kenne ihn nicht. Kurz danach sah ihn ein anderer und Simon de Vos was born in Antwerp, and was first taught by Cornelis de Vos. He was then in the studio of Rubens, with whom he collaborated. He died in Antwerp. He painted historical, genre and portrait subjects. This portrait of St. Peter, which Simon de Vos painted before 1640, shows the repentant apostle. St. Peter denies that he is a follower of Jesus to a Roman soldier. "He had forgotten all his promises and protestations to our Lord, that he would die rather than deny him, he had forgotten the warning given to him by our Lord; but when Jesus looked at him, he felt the enormity of his fault, and his heart was nigh bursting with grief. He had denied his Lord, when that beloved Master was outraged, insulted, delivered up into the hands of unjust judges, when he was suffering all in patience and in silence. His feelings of remorse were beyond expression; he returned to the exterior court, covered his face and wept bitterly; all fear of being recognised was over; he was ready to proclaim to the whole universe both his fault and his repentance." The iconography and composition are directly based on works by Peter Paul Rubens.
