A figure of the Virgin and Child Rhineland or French, mid 14th century Carved in full round. Polychromy probably later. Minimal damages. 108 cm high Privatbesitz Provenance: Lempertz, November 1994 A Rhenish Private Collection in ein Manteltuch gehüllt. Vor der Brust hält sie ein aufgeschlagenes Buch, auf das das The Virgin depicted standing in a S-pose. She is wearing an elaborately draped mantle over a tunic. She is holding the Christ child in her left arm and a book in her right hand. The Child is pointing to the book. The Christ with a long loincloth. Similar Virgins are found throughout the Rhine region, but the closest in style is a Virgin and Child from the Schuster Collection (circa 1330/40). The present sculpture is characterised by the typical facem its smoothly modelled flowing drapery and the way the tunic is visible. Therefore it should be grouped on the area of Cologne.
