156 - An important silver parcel-gilt tankard

Hermannstadt (Sibiu), Sebastian Hann / Michael Hossmann, circa 1715 Lippenrand mit Meisterzeichen "MH" in Wappenkartusche punziert. H. 32 cm, 1635 g Silver parcel-gilt, chased, embossed and engraved. Marked on the lid with master's mark "MH". Fueß und Deckelzier Vergoldet; M(ark) 6 P(iset) 36m fl. 240" Publikation: 32 cm high, 1635 gr. Runder Hohlfuß auf sechs blattverzierten Volutenfüßen. Auf dem stark gewölbten Fußansatz Provenance: This tankard was listed in the estate inventory of Andreas Teutsch (1669-1730) in 1731 with the remark "Eine silberne große Klappkanne mit der Historie des David und Goliath, der Fueß und Deckelzier Vergoldet; M(ark) 6 P(iset) 36m fl. 240". Waßerlust Von Bethlehem". Diese Darstellung nimmt Bezug auf 1. Buch der Chronik 11,15-19: Publication: Exhibition Catalogue: Silber und Salz in Siebenbürgen, Bochum 1999, Volume 1, Cat. 179. die Wache der Philister war damals in Bethlehem. Und David gelüstete es, und er sprach: Cylindrical on bowed circular base chased with scrolling foliage and three scenes showing the life of David. The applied sleeve repouss and chased in high relief with scenes. With auricular scroll handle cast and chased as a female caryatid figure. The bifurcated auricular thumbpiece applied with grotesque mask. The hinged molded cover with three chased scenes between foliate. Detachable unicorn finial. The interior of the hinged cover decorated with a repoussé medaillon showing Hephaestus and Aphrodite, Hermes and Amor. This tankard is described in the inventory of Andreas Teutsch in 1731. It seems highly probable that Andreas Teutsch, who served as mayor of Nagyszeben and became the Saxons' chief bailiff, reveived this tankard as a gift from the Transilvanian Duke Stefan Kornis or his brother Zsigmond Kornis. In 1713, Zsigmond Kornis, a Catholic, was appointed governor. The high quality of the chasing of the tankard is very similar to the Semriger I-jug made by the famous Transylvanian silversmith Sebastian Hann (1644-1713). It`s probably that the tankard was made by Hann because Michael Hossmann worked in the workshop of Hann after his death. Herrn, die du gesandt hattest, nicht gesehen". 3.
