Das Régence bezeichnet die Stilperiode, These candlesticks are decorated in the delicate Régence style, a restrained fashion for silver wares that emerged in France in the late 17th century. German goldsmiths quickly adopted the Régence style from Parisian ornament prints and produced elegant designs of their own. The candlesticks combine plain surfaces with delicately chased (hammered) and engraved Régence motifs: borders of strapwork (interlaced bands resembling leather straps), scrolls, fruits and lambrequins (draped cloths). The fine engraving and fine embossed floral ornament of the late Baroque are eventually superseded by the more abstract flat chased work of the Régence style.
