An important goblet

5 - An important goblet

An important goblet Franz Gondelach, Kassel, circa 1700 Colorless cut and engraved glass. Conical foot, stem designed as a mythical creature with head of a bear. 28 cm high Form eines Fabelwesens mit Bärenkopf geschliffen, das Fell und die Kanten fein graviert. A workshop of great significance was established toward the end of the 17th century at Kassel, in Hesse. There perhaps the greatest of all the relief engravers, Franz Gondelach (1663-1726), handled glass with a truly sculptural feeling. He married Anna Dorothea Trümper in 1689 and acquired citizenship of Kassel in 1694. From his arrival in Kassel he seems to have worked for Landgrave Charles of Hesse-Kassel. On 18 January 1688 he obtained an official appointment and is documented as 'court master glassworker', 'court glass engraver' or 'princely glass engraver'. Gondelach has been accepted as the most important glass engraver of the Baroque period, as he skilfully mastered the techniques of tiefschnitt (deep-relief) and hochschnitt (high-relief) decoration. From 1723 until his death Gondelach directed the Landgrave's glass factory at Altmünden.

Franz Gondelach, Kassel, um 1700
