33 - Großes Tafelbild mit der Heiligen Sippe

A large panel showing the Holy Kinship Southern Germany, dated 1505 Oil on panel. Partly gilded. Dated "1505" in the upper right corner. Recto: Gothic architectural and ornamental decoration in black and red. Minimal restored. Framed. 136 x 102 cm Vertikale Parkettierung entlang der Brettfugen. Min. rest. Gerahmt. 136 x 102 cm The panel depicting the Holy Kinship. The family members are identified by names written across the tops of their heads. In the lower half of the painting, St. Anne and Mary are seated in the centre holding the Christ Child. It is reminiscent of the popular devotional image of St Anne Selbstdritt. Mary's blue dress is the traditional colour of the sky. She is the only woman in the group to wear her hair loose as a symbol of her virginity: all others have their hair covered, as befits married women in the Middle Ages. To the left of Mary is St Anne's third daughter, Mary Salome. Her husband Zebedee is placed behind her. Mary Salome is accompanied by her two sons: St James the Greater and her younger son St John the Evangelist, the baby in her lap. To the right is the family group of St Anne's second daughter, Mary Cleophas with her sons Joseph the Just, Simon Zelotes, James the Lesser and Judas Thaddeus. Behind her is Mary Cleophas' husband Alphaeus. The older generation, the three husband of St Anne are situated in the upper half of the painting, above their descendants. Flanked by two columns are shown from the left to the right: Mary's husbuand Joseph, Anne's first husband Joachim, father of the Virgin Mary, Anne's third husband Salomas and Anne's second husband Cleophas. The Holy Kinship was a popular theme in religious art throughout Germany, especially during the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The term refers to the extended family of Jesus descended from his maternal grandmother St. Anne. According to this tradition, St. Anne, the mother of the Virgin Mary, was grandmother not just to Jesus but also to five of the twelve apostles: John the Evangelist, James the Greater, James the Less, Simon and Jude. These apostles, together with John the Baptist, were all cousins of Jesus. The basis for this family tree rests upon the trinubium, the tradition that Anne had married three times.
