38 - A large group of Madonna and Child

A large group of Madonna and Child Southern Germany, 2nd half 15th century Carved in almost full round with hollow back. Polychromy and gilding. Minimal damages. 107 cm high Die Muttergottes steht mit ihrer rechten Fußspitze auf der Mondsichel. Ihr Körper ist The Mother of God is standing on a crescent moon and is supporting the Child on her left forearm. She is wearing a long gown beneath a heavy mantle falling in deep tubular folds. Her hair is falling in long curled strands over her shoulders. The figure has a doll-like face and exaggerated s-curved forms. Her head is carved flat and mounted with a filigree crow. The humanization of Mary and her Son is consistent with the change in religious feeling in the late Middle Ages. The Virgin takes on more opulent forms, an individual feminine face, and a gentle, pensive expression. Her plump, laughing, wriggling Son is shown completely naked to emphasize the human nature of God Incarnate. The pomegranate in His hands refer to the Eucharist and the Passion. The crescent moon at the Virgin's feet expresses Mary's preeminence over the earthly world and her victory over sin. This symbolic image of the Immaculate Conception was common in the late Middle Ages. It identifies the Virgin with the "Woman" of the Apocalypse, whom Saint John described as a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head (Revelation 12:1). The moon is the symbol of fickleness and corruption. Sternen und steht auf dem sichelförmigen Mond. Der vollständig ausgebildete Bildtypus ist seit dem 14. Jahrhundert nachgewiesen. The Mother of God is standing on a crescent moon Literatur: Ausstellungskatalog: Antlitz des Mittelalters, Rottweil/Aachen 1999, Kat. 34.
